NEWS & EVENTS

In the fall of 2010,  Flo sent me Florence's diary and said her mother's story needed to be told. She gave me carte blanche to do what I wanted with it. I had no idea I was going to write a book. I just wanted to know the whole story after having heard only vague pieces of it years before. After reading the diary over and over again, I wanted to know even more. I plunged into the Washington newspapers and one tidbit led to another, one inquiry, to another...and I was hooked.

Trip to Florida

After a little stumble, the book is fresh--again--off the press with the first copies reserved for Florence's daughter and granddaughter!

I was in Florida to visit with Flo and Sharon who had read the rough drafts and the first TMT version (i.e., "Too Many Typos"), and I was anxious to see them face to face and hand the book to them.  My primary goal in writing was to maintain Florence's voice, and I can say, with their blessing, I did that.

My mother lives in Florida, not too far from Flo and Sharon. I was anxious for her response as well. For a week, I sat close by as my mother read it cover to cover. She hmm'd and snickered and sighed. Where Florence was describing her dress in minute detail, my mother commented it was bit "long", shrugged, and looked at me saying, "Well, that was Florence!" I replied, "Oh, yes, Mom. You know it wasn't ME." I'm not into fashion, nor dresses of any kind! We had a good laugh over that.

My friend Laura drove me to DC in the wee morning hours of Saturday. That was a great idea as we avoided much of the traffic and tourist jams. We found the Cairo in the Northwest residential Dupont Circle neighborhood. A concierge on duty in the lobby allowed us to roam around after signing in at the desk. It was a small lobby, the original floor space now utilized as separate apartments. There were four photos on the wall of the lobby: the Cairo exhibiting its steel skeleton as it was in the process of building, a newly completed Cairo in 1894, a roadside billboard advertising the new Cairo with Mrs. Schneider standing next to it, and a portrait of Mr. T. Franklin Schneider. We went up to the roof but access was limited to residents only with a high-tech gadget to unlock the door. We could see through the window that the view was still stupendous. The grand spiral staircase is confined behind closed doors--I guess due to fire code. The original elevator was modernized with a new door and there was a separate second elevator.  The egyptian/moorish design of the floor tile I think is original to the building--they were in the process of carpeting it over.   Next, we went to Rock Creek Park. It was refusing to bloom--no dogwood blossoms reaching across, no azaleas yet, although the daffodils were "peeping their tiny faces from under Mother Earth"--so there is hope for Spring.

Long Overdue Updates!

So....after my visit to D.C., I had to think long and hard about writing the sequel that so many of my readers wanted. So as not be a spoiler for those who have not yet read Deliverance, I will just say they wanted to know "the rest of her story!"  In order to write it, there had to be a compelling interest for me and I found it in the man she chose to marry. Her journey to that man had to be paved with something more than romantic idealism for her to have accepted him, and had Papa known of his family background, the marriage would never have taken place. Ironic in that he was just the man to show her what love and life are really all about.

Beyond Deliverance--the title for the sequel is intended to have a double interpretation. First, obviously, that it is a sequel and secondly, it describes the underlaying theme that I hope some--if not all--of my readers will connect with.  The publisher has it now--and at this date, I am waiting to approve the cover. The cover art design was inspired by Sharon's (Florence's granddaughter) idea of shadow figures of men behind Florence's image--expressing the pursuit of so many personalities. I've highlighted the frontrunners, which for me is quite moving to see them gathered around her on the cover of the book.

It's been a busy year and a half that has included book club appearances, and book signings. I've had a lot of fun meeting my readers! I am encouraged by their praises to write more and am especially humbled by their own insights about Deliverance from Evil. I've put extensive marketing on hold as I'm researching and writing the sequel.

My techie friend tells me I setup my "News and Events" page wrong in that I should have the latest entry at the top....Sorry! You'll have to please SCROLL DOWN.

I just got word that The Sequel: Beyond Deliverance is ready to be launched! I have not as yet received my author's copy for review and I can hardly wait to have it in hand. I have to admit, it makes me a little anxious to think about you all reading it! I do, so very much, hope that you enjoy the read. Deliverance from Evil was well received, so I hope I've done at least as good a job on the sequel.

November 28  The sequel is launched!

What genre does this story belong to? I have had a hard time determining this because although it is a true story  I classify it as "fiction" to allow for some creative license and the ability to add fictional or composite characters. I cringe at the suggestion it is a romance novel. Historical romance novel isn't much better. Historical fiction is how I classified the 1st book. I suppose for readers to find it, it must be labeled historical romance. Those interested in the telling of this story don't really care, I'm sure, what I call it. But readers searching for a good story are typing in what keywords on the search engines? That's what I have to figure out. I'd rather be writing or researching!
